观众和业内人士也都盛赞该剧精良的制作和丝丝入扣的故事情节。
Based on a Ma Boyong’s novel of the same name, the series follows the characters Zhang Xiaojing and Li Bi, and their efforts to foil a terrorist attack on the imperial capital of Chang’an in the Tang Dynasty.
The first episode debuted on Chinese video platform Youku on June 27, receiving both critical and audience acclaim.
On Douban, a major Chinese media rating site, the series has scored 8.6 out of 10.
The popularity culminated in July when almost every entertainment-themed Wechat subion account published good reviews. Viewers and industry influencers have been applauding its meticulous production and enchanting storyline.

And as of July 1, the Chinese historical suspense drama got released in other Asian countries, such as Japan, Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam, and – for the first time ever for a Chinese series – it is intended to be available for North American audiences through video streaming websites including Viki, Amazon and Youtube, as paid content, soon.

《长安十二时辰》的故事设定于唐朝天宝三载，也是唐朝由盛转衰的时期。
顾名思义，这部剧讲述了在全城欢庆上元节之际，长安城内一日之内所发生的一系列险象环生的故事。
剧中的两位主人公张小敬（雷佳音饰）和李必（易烊千玺饰）需要在24小时之中保卫长安城，和企图火烧长安的反派狼卫斗智斗勇。

“The Longest Day in Chang’an” is set in the Tang Dynasty era (618 – 907), a time when the most prosperous dynasty ever in the Chinese history began to decline.
The series has 25 episodes and the whole story takes place during 24 hours of the Lantern Festival, when the whole of Chang’an City was out celebrating, drawing comparisons to “24”, the popular U.S. crime thriller TV series aired by Fox in the early 2000s starring Kiefer Sutherland.
The two main characters, Li Bi and Zhang Xiaojing, have to crack down on a group of rebel forces who are scheming to destroy the capital city during this period.

Also rare is how “The Longest Day in Chang’an” features multiple interweaving plotlines rather than having a single major story buffered by subplots.

Though it’s a thoroughly modern show, the efforts paid by the crew to revive real Tang Dynasty history has also led to “The Longest Day in Chang’an” winning acclaim.
The TV series opens with a Martin Scorsese-style long take which weaves through Chang’an, showing the city’s daily life. Every detail, including the traditional clothes, weapons, women’s makeup, architecture and Lantern Festival decorations have been carefully replicated based on historical archives.

“I have tried my best to recreate a single day in the Tang Dynasty,” said series’ director Cao Dun.
Before shooting, Cao and the writing team read the original novel three times. The final of the opening episode was the 23rd version written as they kept polishing the story.
据新华社报道，这个“全员强迫症”的剧组还专门请来专家，精心复原了28种供各种宴会日常场景所需的唐朝点心，还将古法造纸等非物质文化遗产巧妙融入，带观众领略文化之美、生活之美。
The crew went to great lengths to revive everyday life in the period. Experts even gave instructions on the preparation of 28 Tang Dynasty desserts appearing in different scenes. The crew also referred to patterns on relics for costumes, and recreated details depicted in famous artworks.
Elements of traditional culture permeate the drama, with aspects of culture such as traditional papermaking process weaved into the plot.
曹盾告诉记者，“我想把中国优秀传统文化融入剧集之中，让大家看到传统文化的‘美’。”这种美首先是美学上的美，体现在礼仪、服饰、食物、生活用具等多种方面；同时，也是蕴藏在传统文化中的“价值美”，既体现了中华民族的韧劲，也彰显了中华民族的开放、包容和自信。
“I want to blend traditional Chinese culture into the series and let the audience appreciate its beauty,” Cao said.
“The beauty is not only aesthetic, which is reflected in social manners, clothing and cuisine, but also the beauty of traditional values,” he said.

I’m writing a review in honour of the amazing acting and plot delivered in this drama. This drama reminds me of Nirvana in Fire. It’s a complex story with fast moving scenes and plot developments, however the story is delivered with excellent acting and thoughtful pacing. That conveys the sense of careful deliberation by the decision makers in the story, underpinning the importance of every action and decision undertaken during each scene. The two main actors are amazing. This is an excellent drama.

Wow! Just got done watching ep 1 since I’m watching from Los Angeles California. This drama is so intense already. If they keep this up all through the end, this will indeed be the greatest C-drama historical piece that I’ve watched this year. Jackson Yi had grown up!! He is so good and intense in this one. Last year I’ve watched The Song of Phoenix and I liked him there but he was only a kid. Now seeing him as lead in a major piece, with such intense role– I am loving him in this. Episode 1 is shown to begin at time between 09:00 to 10:00 (modern 24-hour clock). The series is meant to cover at least “24 hours” in Chang An.
第一集的故事时间开始于9点至10点之间（现代24小时制）。这部剧要讲述的是长安城24小时之内所发生的事。
Tang Dynasty China had a system to divide time of day using a twelve dual-hour notation and also 24 hours through an extended notation.
唐朝所使用的计时法将一天分为12个时辰，再分“初”、“正”两格，共分为24小时。
In beginning of episode 1 the sun-dial is at 巳初 or the hour between 09:00 to 10:00. In episode 12, the sun-dial is at 未正 or the hour between 14:00 to 15:00.
在第1集开头，日晷报时为“巳初”（9点-10点），而到了第12集，日晷指在了“未正”（14点-15点）的位置。
Trivia: Ancient China actually has many smaller units for time measurement, eg the time unit of 弹指 seen in many Wuxia stories is 5 seconds.

The subtitles on Viki as of now contain some errors, which is to be expected as the dialogues make heavy uses of classical Chinese. Native speakers in China (who should have received some training in classical Chinese in high school) are complaining that they have to use Chinese subtitles and look up phrases on the internet to understand the more difficult part of the dialogues.
Viki网站上的字幕里面有一些错误，这可以想见，毕竟对话中使用了大量的文言文。哪怕是在高中学过一些文言文的中国人都在吐槽得看中文字幕，并且上网查对白中疑难之处的意思。
Some of the mistranslations are actually detrimental to understanding the plot. For example, Jackson Yi’s character Li Bi was the deputy chief, not the chief, of the bureau (I bet even a lot of native Mandarin speakers don’t know this because they are unfamiliar with the Tang bureaucracy!). Thinking he’s the chief will likely result in confusion over the political dynamics. The sub team is probably working to fix the errors but the Chinese required is on a whole other level than, say, the Story of Ming Lan.
一些错译其实也不利于理解剧情。比如，易烊千玺饰演的靖安司司丞李必，是靖安司的二把手，而非一把手（打赌很多中国人也不知道这点，因为大伙儿都对唐代官僚制度并不了解！）。把他误认为是头儿很有可能会对剧中的时局感到困惑。字幕组或许正在努力改正错误，但这所需的中文功底可比《知否知否，应是绿肥红瘦》的要求高多了。
如今，《长安十二时辰》这部剧正在持续热播更新中，现在盖棺定论将其封为神剧似乎为时尚早。当然，剧中也存在着许多不足之处。
但对于历史的态度，对故事的揣摩，以及对场景的复原，这种踏实的态度让观众们看到了国产剧的新模式。
或许，这才是国产剧应有的样子。
