Which is a better place to live: Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, or the Philippines?

Suddenly once friendly people were now making me feel like an enemy entering their country.
So thats when I shifted transit hubs to Bangkok and Thailand became quite appealing.
I also spent a lot of time in the Philippines especially the Visayas. But I never felt entirely safe as guns are actually made in the country and for as little as US$100 you can have someone rubbed out. That was scary news to me.

I do not see you mention Hanoi?
I think Hanoi is a wonderful city, I lived for 3 years in HCMC, and now, I have lived for 10 years in Hanoi.
Hanoi has many hidden beauty.

I love the architecture of Hanoi but hate the pollution. I have an American expat who has lived in Hanoi for nearly 10 years and his health got so bad he even thought he would have to return to the states but then he discovered Dalat and he hasn’t been happier. Clean fresh mountain air and plenty of steep hills to keep up his cardiovascular exercise.

Unfortunately, NZ does not pay out a pension if I move out to Perth after 6 months. I like Perth and it is only a jump away to Asia. All the same, I will move to Vietnam after my 8 months tour of Russia and the surrounding countries starting in Dec 2021. My will settle down for good in Saigon in September 2022 if God willing,

To add on to one of the most importabt factor the other answers are missing out, safety would be one tgat everyone should have taken a point on.
Singapore: Lowest crime rate in Asia, the lowest violent crime per capita. Police takes about 5 minutes no matter your location, and is very efficient. Big gap in terms of safety compared to the other countries asked.
Malaysia: Ranked 2nd in the list. Not as many violent crimes compared to the other countries, police are often sighted but arrival time could be around 10 to 15 minutes even if in city. However, some police in poorer areas would have slight corruption.
Vietnam: Tad bit lower than Malaysia. Average crime rates and police response would be in the 20 minutes. However, cops are easy to bribe.
Bangkok and Philippines: Corruption plagues the government, crime rates can be one of the highest, foreigners targets for some crimes. Prerty high murder rates and police response could be 30 minutes to an hour. Dangerous places in those with high human traffic areas.

Depends on your race & outlook for most part.
For Whites, SEA is a playground in any scenario. It’d be a toss-up between the Philippines and Thailand though a fair few do go for Singapore.
For Indians, it’s a choice between Singapore & Malaysia. Other nations aren’t the most accepting towards our guys & open antagonism is fairly common at some points.
For Arabs & other Middle Eastern folk, it’s Malaysia on account of shared religious background. The religious & cultural factor often comes into play in the opposite sense when it comes to Thailand and, to a lesser extent, in the Philippines.
For Hispanics, it again depends on their skin tone & cultural background.

I would be biased and say the Philippines because I am Filipino. But in my opinion, to be unbiased, you have to check what is your definition or parameters of better? is it in terms of economics or qualitative? like happiness indicators or hospitality or being welcoming.
Economically, choosing the more prosperous country would be better. It would have better services for its citizens. So an ordinary citizen or a middle income family would tend to do better in a richer country.
Although the Philippines is still a developing country, people greet you with smiles and laughter.
So again, it depends on what you mean by better.

Only you can determine what is better for you .
All these places have things in common and things unique to them . A book can be written on the subject itself.
For me Malaysia would be the place. It is not as expensive as Singapore. It has variety in geographical environments, cultures, rural and urban places etc . Over all, it is behind Singapore but ahead of the rest in on my ‘ Better Scale ‘ .

Vietnam can always provide you :
a job as English teacher at high salary as Vietnamese is keen to have their kids to learn that language as early as 3–5 years old.
nice, slightly touched or totally untouched beaches nearly anywhere from North to South.
World grade landmark and natural sites ( Ha Long Bay, Trang An, Tam Coc Bich Dong, Phong Nha, Paradise Cave, Son Doong Cave … )
Safe and cheap stay and nice foods

Having lived in all of these countries and it really depends on what you are looking for.
I would say if you are looking for the best in terms of cost Vietnam wins. A great place Saigon, is an absolute gem the people are nice the food is great and the prices are very affordable. Cons are the traffic is manic (but kinda safe if you get to know the unofficial rules).
Philippines, has some of the friendliest people in the world and English is widely spoken and in Manila malls (like most cities in south east Asia) are everywhere., it can be a great place the traffic is manic and one of the worst in the world, and found poverty to be the highest in any of the above countries. Although, most of the countries (with the exception of Singapore) have low wages people are happy and not to much poverty while in Manila, it is very common and quite sad to see. It does have a cheap residency program and a good place to be based if you like beaches.
Thailand, has some of the better development with Malaysia. Cheap flights. Very easy to live a western lifestyle here and then go straight back to Thai in the next street very dynamic place, people are nice. So of the cons are English is the least spoken of the countries mentioned, and Thai baht is presently strong so will make living more expensive than the other (except Singapore).
KL is a the top of the list affordable a good residency program, English speaking, cheap flights, good transportation. I have looked at living in Singapore but then questioned why? when you get 75% of Singapore in KL for a 1/3 of the price. With in my option a bit more edge to it.
Singapore. clean sterile, and perfect. The worlds best everything. A great place if you like that. And would say the best place for an expat or to work. And if you have the money for a residency (at a cool 1.5 million U.S) the best option. As very developed, safe and green. The cons are its very small about a 1/3 of the size of London so can feel a bit cramp and easy to see the whole island in a weekend.
