NUS新校长Tan Eng Chye教授致2018新年贺词

亲爱的同事，学生，校友和朋友们：

一个新的开始

新一年的开始往往是一个特殊的时刻 – 这是一个反思前一年的机会，也是一个思考未来一年新的可能性，方向和目标的机会。

作为新加坡国立大学的第五任校长和这个非常特殊的机构的第二十三任领导人，我感到非常荣幸和开心。

正如你们中的一些人所知道的，我与国大有着深厚的关系，无论是个人还是专业方面。 1981年，我作为数学系的本科学生加入了国大，并有机会担任学生俱乐部的领导职位。在我大学的时候，我也遇到了我的妻子，同一个系的同学。我很幸运得到了鼓励我加入学术界的教授的指导。毕业后，在国大高级辅导计划下，我在耶鲁大学攻读博士学位。我于1989年回到国大担任教员，自1994年起担任多个领导角色。2003年，我被任命为理学院院长，2007年起任教务长。

我非常感谢Tan Chorh Chuan教授在过去的九年担任新加坡国立大学校长期间作出的杰出贡献。他被卫生部任命为新加坡首位卫生科学家，医疗卫生转型办公室创始执行董事。我知道，我们中的许多人都期待与他密切合作。

对于Tan Chorh Chuan教授和所有参与实现顺利交接的人，我想说，感谢您的支持。

塑造国大未来

在2017年的最后一个季度，我参加了一系列的交流会，见了你们中的很多人。分享我对教育，研究，企业和管理的想法。感谢大家在这些聚会上与我分享的反馈和建议。

在新的一年里，国大管理层将与董事会，教职员，学生和校友紧密合作，进一步推动国大作为世界一流大学之一的转型之旅。特别是，我们将探索如何能够：

•增加在创新和企业方面的领先优势和竞争力，“超越我们的分量”;

•开发卓越研究的新高峰;

•招募，培养和留住一流的教职员和研究人员；

•进一步培养“面向未来”的学生;

•实现行政卓越。

做一个伟大的大学

国大多年来取得了巨大的发展。今天，我们在新加坡和国际上都是一个备受推崇的机构，我们的校友们正在创新和攀登新的高度，创造积极的影响，为社会做贡献。

我想感谢你们每一位对国大的贡献。我非常热切地期待与你们一起努力，把国大变成一所更伟大的大学。

Dear Colleagues, Students, Alumni and Friends

A New Beginning

The start of a new year is always a special time – it’s an opportunity to reflect on the year before, and a time to think about new possibilities, directions and goals in the year ahead.

I am humbled and honoured to start this new year as the 5th President of the National University of Singapore (NUS), and the 23rd leader of this very special institution.

As some of you may know, I have a long and deep relationship with NUS, both personally and professionally. I joined NUS as an undergraduate student in the Department of Mathematics in 1981, and had the opportunity to serve in a leadership position of a student club. I also met my wife, a fellow student in the same department, during my undergraduate years. I was fortunate to have been mentored by professors who encouraged me to join academia. Upon graduation, under the NUS Senior Tutorship scheme, I pursued my doctoral studies at Yale University. I returned to NUS in 1989 as a faculty member, and served in several leadership roles since 1994. I was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Science in 2003, and Provost from 2007.

I am immensely grateful to Professor Tan Chorh Chuan for his outstanding leadership as President of NUS over the last nine years. He has been appointed by the Ministry of Health as Singapore’s first Chief Health Scientist and Founding Executive Director of the Office of Healthcare Transformation. I know that many of us look forward to working closely with him in his new role.

To Chorh Chuan and everyone involved in enabling a smooth leadership transition, thank you for your support.

Shaping NUS’ Future Together

In the last quarter of 2017, I met with many of you in a series of engagement sessions to share my thoughts on our education, research, enterprise, and administration. Thank you for the feedback and suggestions that you have shared with me at these gatherings.

In the new year ahead, the NUS leadership team will be working closely with the Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, students and alumni to further propel NUS on its transformation journey as one of the world’s leading universities. In particular, we will be exploring how we can:

• Increase our lead and competitiveness in Innovation and Enterprise, to “punch well above our weight”;

• Develop new peaks of research excellence;

• Recruit, develop and retain a top-notch pool of faculty and researchers who will help spearhead this transformation;

• Further “future-proof” our students; and

• Achieve administrative excellence.

To Be A Great University

NUS has achieved tremendous growth over the years. Today, we are a highly regarded institution in Singapore and internationally, and members of our community are innovating and scaling new heights, creating positive impact, and contributing to society.

I would like to thank each and every one of you for your many contributions to NUS. I look forward with great enthusiasm to working with you as we strive together to transform NUS into a truly great university.
