As a Singaporean, I know some people who hate Lee Kuan Yew but honestly without him, we would be living in slums, call him a dictator, but he made Singapore what we are today. He is indeed Singapore’s father.

RonLarhz
He didnt do it alone. And Singapore is already a trading port, not fishing village they like to propagate, under british rule.

LKY is the best world leader ever TBH

Chronicles
The story of Singapore is truly miraculous. Changing lives of citizens in one generation is an unmatched achievement.

Well it’s kinda common in Asia, China, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand

@Haru Yanto Those countries you mentioned have larger population, large land and each of them have some sort of natural resources but Singapore have small land, small population and zero natural resources but within 50 years they transformed from a third world country to a first world country…………..

Far Hsa
@Desmond Lim they are never 3rd world country , they are already rich during british time because brit develop them singapore are their hub in this region

Desmond Lim
@Far Hsa yeah but after Singapore was occupied by Japan Singapore was neglected for 3 whole years. Lots of infrastructure destroyed and British dont bother to rebuild. Things got even worse when they withdraw from Singapore. So the point still stand where they transformed from third world to first world within a generation….

Pidgeon
At independence, Singapore was already an economic center in Asia. All the banks and companies already set up offices in Singapore.
Singapore’s 1965 GDP per capita was $517, many times higher than many countries: South Korea at $108, China at $97, Thailand $138, Burma at $17, Taiwan at $225.
In 1965, Singapore was the fourth richest country in Asia, behind only Japan, HK and Brunei (oil reserves).

Ong Teng Kee
@Pidgeon no,singapore and malaya together are asia no 1 gdp per capita in early 1950s ahead of Japan

Keyboard Emperor
Singapore was already rich in the British times and they control the Melacca Strait, which is the throat of international shipping routes, the great geolocation plays a big role in making Singapore rich.
the most inspiring examples of transformations of economies from dirt poverty to prosperity in just one generation would be South Korea and China. Smaller countries are easier to develop if they can export to the world markets, but China, with 1.4 billion people, was much much much harder to develop itself when everybody was poor, but China makes a humankind miracle in the last 40 years anyway.
