I kinda wonder how many refused to do the interview because it would waste their precious studying time

Calculus
That only applies to high school students. College in Korea is not as intense as it is in high school there once you get into a good university.

Napoleonic British Officer Threatens You
Studying is important, most people think studying ends at school. That’s just a naïve assumption. Sure, you’ve got to balance studying and your personal life, but studying improves your knowledge. Look at Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerburg, they were the nerds back in the day.

Did he just casually say that he placed first in the national mathematical exam?

In Asia maths is given so much importance

The education system is quite literally the hunger games high school edition. You fight with your peers and give all u’ve got to be at the top. Either it’s SNU or nothing.

So true

Sakura Kumari
What a waste of education! No Nobel Prize either.

Ichigo Hoshimiya
@Sakura Kumari Its not a waste. Studying is never a waste.

Sakura Kumari
@Ichigo Hoshimiya
I really wonder what they’re studying there. Any useful subjects for human being? 0 Nobel Prize from Korea, why?

Battle Toad
This is no overstatement. In Korea, everything is done in a competition. Everyone is a competitor. Just think about all that pressure, stress, and expectations. It’s an entirely different world and something not many kids can survive. High suicide rates are not the exception.

Battle Toad
@Sakura Kumari So you think these people are “losers” like in your previous comments?

Abhi B
It’s actually quite sad. I dunno why people say that Korean education system is one of the best.

Sakura Kumari
@Battle Toad
You’ll never know if you’re losers or not until the moment you die!!! Or I do not think there are anything like losers or winners in life either. Do we have to compete and compare everything with others? Are you saying just because those kids went to good universities they’re the winners, and the rest are totally losers???

ye ee
@Sakura Kumari a nobel prize isn’t really a measure of how great an education system of a country is

South Korea is very modern and very conservative at the same time. Interesting.

Peace
The more conservative,i would say!

yeah, sk developed too fast economically for their social standards to catch up. although social standards are getting better, the rate is still slower compared to how fast the economic growth rate was. it’s literally called the han river “miracle” economically, very sad social standards are still slower

Bibi
@Noseefood Korea is not an emerging country, it’s a highly developed, modern economy with super high standards of living.

Same with Japan

Asian countries that developed in the second-half of 1900s and developing Asian countries in general tend to be socially conservative, but literally progressive in everything else.

deekay13
@Sandhya Raghuram that’s right. Modernization does not have to mean westernization.

@BIJ News yeah that’s just 30 years. Guess how long other countries (i.e the US, England, Germany, Japan) have been a “first world country”; hint longer than a century.

Not just the students… the social happiness index is very bottom I think we (Koreans) need to focus on how to be happy more

I’m a freshman. Few months ago, I thought like this, “My biggest flaw is that I couldn’t enter Seoul National University.” It was a shame for me. The fact that I failed to pass the interview phase pushed me down, and I was so ashamed of myself for a while.
Now I am satisfied with my life and living happily

I guess creativity is lacking in every asian countries ofcourse because of it’s EDUCATION SYSTEM!!!!!

I really feel for those kids in Korea (and other Asian countries) who spend their childhood and adolescence studying.. most of them probably don’t have time to pursue their hobbies. That one lady is right, something fundamental about the education system should change!

I’m glad to live and have done my studies in Switzerland. In here, these sort of rankings don’t exist. You don’t have to be the the best in every class and be admitted to prestigious schools and unis to be successful. The great thing about our system is that after secondary school, you’d either go to highscool or choose to take an apprenticeship (you learn a job, e.g. as a mechanic). In any case you will be studying for a few years and get a diploma once completed. The grest thing is that if you have gotten your working diploma. You can still go to umiversity to study if you wish. You will not be rejected simply because you haven’t attended prestigious schools before or had the top grades.

Everyone is given the opportunity to evolve intellectualy no matter how they have performed before.
Swiss highschools and universities belong to the best in the world, yet we aren’t restricting access to only the top end students.

This has a direct correlation with suicide rates in S. Korea, there are lot of people in S. Korea who are not truly happy

surfnusa
Even worse for young adult males who have to serve in the SK army for 2 years. Suicide rates are the highest amongst that group because their girlfriends break up with them while they have to serve. Just some info from my SK male cohorts.

At first, it did for me, too. But when I actually went, I realized it wasn’t bad at all. I actually feel more free than I ever have! I was homeschooled and my life was very small and under my parent’s eyes. I don’t rebel but I enjoy my new freedom!

In the US, when you go to the uni libraries, it’s generally empty. But when I studied abroad in Korea, reserving a desk in uni libraries was competitive in itself. The way Korean students study is on another level. It’s scary.
