For a long time, the “diamond blocks” of Yung Kuang Road were forgotten to many. These once-empty HDB blocks resurfaced in public consciousness after the Government announced that they would be used to house healthy foreign workers to keep them safe from COVID-19. Though seemingly plain, these four blocks have had a colourful history. Built by the JTC in 1972, companies in the neighbouring industrial estates rented these units to their workers. In the 1980s, these flats were even associated with gang activities. Occupancy gradually dwindled in the 1990s and these blocks were later rented out to meet various social needs. Perhaps it is a coincidence, but how apt it is that we have a Jewel in the east and this Diamond in the west. #ShapesOfHome

🟥🟦🟨 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗻 at 𝗠𝗮𝗰𝗽𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻 Seen here are the HDB blocks at Balam Road built in 1965, the year Singapore became independent. Apart from their historical vintage, these blocks have been painted in red, blue, and yellow. These are primary colours and also the ones popularised by Dutch painter Piet Mondrian (1872 – 1944) in his 1930 classic Composition with Red, Blue, and Yellow. The simple geometric patterns of Mondrian art have inspired many luxury items, such as bags, luggage, and dresses (from Yves Saint Laurent, no less). HDB should be credited for applying Mondrian art to basic shelter for the common man. It shows that public housing in Singapore can also be a canvas for artistic expression, along with green spaces and common amenities (such as badminton courts and fitness corners) that can be enjoyed by all. #ShapesOfHome
