A Dog in the Food Centre
Ben scanned the noisy and crowded food centre for a place to sit. Seeing a man slurping up the remaining soup in his bowl, Ben walked as fast as he could with his tray of chicken rice and waited next to him. As soon as the man got up from his seat, Ben pushed his bowl aside and sat down.
Despite the heat and the uncomfortable seat, Ben was enjoying every morsel of his food. He was about to put another spoonful of the succulent chicken into his mouth when heard a bark. Curious, Ben turned around and saw a lady walking with her pet Schnauzer in his direction. Ben has always disliked dogs for he felt that they were noisy, smelly and dirty. He could not imagine why people wanted to keep them. Ignoring the dog, he continued eating. At that moment, he saw the monstrous little creature being lifted loving onto the seat next to his. Ben wrinkled his nose in disgust. He watched in horror as the lady opened a packet of dog biscuits, scattered them on the table in front of her dog and petted it as it took each one into its mouth. The more heartily the dog ate, the faster its tongue lapped about the table and the more its saliva splattered about.
Ben was appalled by what was happening. Not only was it unhygienic to let the dog eat off the table, it was also a violation of the rules at the food centre. Bristling with anger, Ben was about to demand that the lady leave when the dog began staring at Ben. Then without warning, it leapt from its seat and landed on the table, lapping up the food from Ben’s plate. Ben jumped up in fright. He could not believe what was happening. The lady did not seem perturbed by what her dog had done. She merely told it in a gentle voice to stop what it was doing.
“Get your dog away!” Ben screamed at the lady.
Fortunately, three of the stallholders appeared at her side. One of them grabbed the dog forcefully from the table. The other told the lady to leave the food centre with her dog immediately. The lady looked around apologetically and hurriedly carried her dog away. Ben, whose stomach was growling earlier, had lost his appetite. Leaving the plate of chicken rice on the table, he left the food centre, vowing never to eat there again.
