如何用英文表达“很穷、身无分文”,难道只能用poor吗?

如果有人问你借钱,想了半天还是拒绝了:Because I am poor to death. 这样表达可以不?

Low on cash

(缺钱花)

low on sth, 就是缺某样东西的意思,low on cash就是没钱啦,缺钱的意思咯。

例:You got me, I am low on cash this month!(被你猜对了,我这个月正缺钱花呢。)

Poor as a church mouse

(一贫如洗)

church mouse, 就是教堂里的老鼠,教堂里的老鼠是得不到吃的,啥都没有。于是形容一个人一贫如洗的时候就可以这么比喻。

例:Nobody could imagine that he was as ppor as a church mouse. (没人能想象他当初是一贫如洗的。)

Dirt-poor

(非常穷困,极其贫困)

这是一个俚语,形容那些很穷困的人。

例:Where would this dirt-poor Jack get a hundred dollars? (Jack这个穷光蛋在哪弄来了100美金?)

Working poor

 (穷忙族)

穷忙族指的是那些在工作,却很低工资的人。拼了老命养活自己的人。

例:Now, more and more people are involved in “working poor”. (现在越来越多的人被卷入了“穷忙族”的圈子了。)

Live from paycheck to paycheck

 (月光族)

这里的月光并不是指天上那个月亮,听这个名字就知道是每个月拿了多少工资,当月就花完了,所以叫月光族。

例:We stress about the fact that we live from paycheck to paycheck but we don’t change our spending habits. (我们强调我们是月光族,前总是不够花,但我们却不改变消费习惯。)

Max out credit card 

(刷爆卡)

max out的意思就是到上限了,所以就是刷爆卡的意思。

例:A good way to become penniless is to max out your credit cards and keep borrowing more until the repayments overwhelm you. (想变成穷光蛋最好的办法就是最大限度地透支你的信用卡然后还要不断借钱,弄得一屁股债。)

Be broke

(破产,身无分文)

《破产姐妹》的英文是 2 broke sisters , broke就是破产的意思。

例:If you keep spending money like this, you’re going be broke. (如果你继续这样花钱,你很快会身无分文的。)

Live from hand to mouth

 (勉强糊口)

live from就是以什么东西为生,hand to mouth就是勉强能吃得上饭。

例:When I had no job last winter, I had to live from hand to mouth. (去年冬天没找到工作的时候,我不得不过着勉强糊口的生活。)

scrape  by

(勉强度日)

Scrape做名词时可以表示“困境”,scrape by则意指“勉强度日”,钱不够花啊!

例句:Borrowing  money  from  friends  and  relatives  helped  him  to  scrape  by. 他全靠亲朋好友的接济度日。

make  ends  meet 

(收支相抵)

“收支相抵”、“量入为出”,“收入微薄,勉强过活”都是这个短语要表达的。

例句:They’ve  got  to  watch  every  penny  to  make  ends  meet. 他们得精打细算才能维持下去。

keep  body  and  soul  together  

(勉強維持生活)

要把灵魂和肉身keep在一起了,当然得挣钱糊口了。

例句:I hate  my  job,  but  I  have  to  keep  body  and  soul  together  somehow. 我讨厌我的工作,但不管怎么样我得挣钱糊口。

feel the pinch

(手头拮据)

Pinch可表示“匮乏;压力”,feel the pinch意指因缺钱而陷入困境。来,feel一下~

例句:The  high  rate  of  unemployment  is  making  many  families  feel  the  pinch. 失业率很高,许多家庭感到日子不好过了。

chicken  feed

(微不足道的钱)

不要按照字面意思 简单地理解为“鸡饲料”, 鸡是一种很小的家禽, 它的胃当然也很小, 吃不了太多东西。 所以这个短语的实际意思是 “很小数量的钱,少得像喂鸡的饲料一样”。

例句:My  salary  is  chicken  feed  compared  with hers. 与她相比,我的工资少得可怜。
